John Newton, an English clergyman who had once worked in the Atlantic slave trade, wrote these words, and they appeared in the Olney Hymns collection. Most American congregations now sing them to the tune known as New Britain, though Amazing Grace has a few versions, and you will hear the melody bent and ornamented differently from one church to the next.

On the 12-hole ocarina the tab runs from C up to high C with no sharps or flats, and nothing in it calls for the sub-holes or the thumb holes. That leaves you free to work on tone. In my experience, the more you memorize and practice this one, the better it sounds and the more soul comes out of it. Once the notes are in your fingers, try holding the long ones a little longer.
