How to Play Silent Night on the 12 Hole Ocarina

About Silent Night
#

Silent Night was first sung on Christmas Eve in 1818, in the small church of St. Nicholas at Oberndorf, Austria. Joseph Mohr wrote the words and Franz Xaver Gruber set them to music. My wife asked me to tab this one, and it sounds beautiful on the 12-hole ocarina.

It is also a good example of why the extra holes matter. The melody drops to low Bb, which needs one of the small sub-holes, and a 6-hole cannot play that note without overblowing or underblowing. At the other end it rises to high Eb, opening the thumb holes, and the middle Eb takes a sub-hole too. The words sit under the notes across five lines, so it is easy to play while others sing.

Silent Night Lyrics
#

Silent night, holy night, All is calm
All is bright. Round yon Virgin Mother and child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in Heavenly Peace
Sleep in Heavenly Peace
Silent Night Holy night! Shepherds quake
at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar
Heav’nly hosts sing alleluia!
Christ, the Savior is born
Chris, the Savior is born
Silent night, holy night Son of God,
love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at They birth
