How to Play Scarborough Fair on the 12 Hole Ocarina

About Scarborough Fair

#

This is one of my favorite ren fair, medieval-sounding songs on the 12-hole ocarina, and it may be the song that got me to like the instrument in the first place. The tone is lively, but the melody underneath is sad, and the ocarina’s soft voice brings out both at once.

It is a traditional English ballad with no known author. The tab sets the words under the notes across four lines, with the verses written out. It spans C to high D on natural notes only, so there are no sharps or flats to learn. That high D is the single moment a thumb hole opens, and it deserves a little practice on its own before you play the whole verse.

Scarborough Fair Lyrics

#

Are you going to Scarborough fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Without no seam nor needlework
Then she’ll be a true love of mine
Tell her to find me an acre of land
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Between the salt water and the sea strand
Then she’ll be a true love of mine
Are you going to Scarborough fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
