How to Play Three Blind Mice on the 12 Hole Ocarina

About Three Blind Mice

#

It is one of the more violent nursery rhymes I know of. Three Blind Mice is also one of the oldest: a version was printed by Thomas Ravenscroft in 1609, in a book called Deuteromelia. It began as a round, and it still works as one, so two or three players can start a phrase apart and the parts fit together.

On the 12-hole ocarina the tune uses the natural notes from C to high C and nothing more. It never reaches the small sub-holes or the thumb holes, so it is a comfortable early song. The words are under the notes. Once you can play it alone, find a friend and try it as a round. The same tune carries the scout song Roadkill Stew.

Three Blind Mice Lyrics

#

Three blind mice. Three blind mice.
See how they run. See how they run.
They all chased after the farmer’s wife.
Who cut off their heads with a carving knife.
Have you ever seen such a thing in your life.
As three blind mice.
