About Happy Birthday#
The melody of Happy Birthday goes back to Good Morning to All, a song for young schoolchildren by the sisters Mildred and Patty Hill, published in 1893. For decades the birthday version was the subject of a copyright claim, until a 2015 court ruling found the claim invalid. It is now treated as public domain in the United States.
On the 12-hole ocarina the tab spans a single octave, C to high C, and uses only the natural notes. It does not need the sub-holes or the thumb holes, and at 25 notes across four lines it is short enough to learn in an evening. It is worth learning well, since you will get asked to play it.
