About the Native American Scale#
I love what this scale does to the ocarina. Hold yourself to these five notes and it almost turns into a different instrument, closer in sound to a wooden flute than to the sweet little vessel you started with. The set matches the minor pentatonic tuning that most Native American style flutes are built around.
On the 12-hole it is one short line that starts on D and tops out at high C. Every note is natural, and none of them calls for a sub-hole or a thumb hole. The notes are easy; the feeling is the work. Add hoots and trills, let a phrase die away on the breath, and lift your fingers slowly on and off the holes to give it some soul.
